I have found that it is normally easier for me to recognize improvement in learners when they are beginners. This is because I experience when conversation becomes easier, more fluent, and faster paced. It is more difficult when the learner is a higher level, and therefore I think the use of progress tests would be most helpful here. The results of the tests can assist in ensuring the training plan is helpful, and pitched at the correct level. I also believe that getting feedback from learners, both verbally and written, can be just as important as progress tests as learners then get the opportunity to comment on whether they want/need to focus more on certain things, or to make changes to the training plan. I was surprised to see just how many different types of English test/exams there are. Most of them I had not heard of before.
