This unit covered the subject of Teaching Receptive Skills. Reading and listening are equally important and are taught for purpose and entertainment. Special skills utilized when reading or listening are predictive skills, scanning, skimming, obtaining detailed information, and deduction from context. Problems with reading and listening are mainly with connection with the language contained in the text, the topic, and the tasks the students will perform. Ways of approaching language difficulty include Pre-teaching vocabulary and careful selection of texts. Topics of texts can be motivating or boring to students. If the teacher can get the students motivated, they will be more likely to listen and read. Finally, it is important to provide comprehension tasks that promote understanding as opposed to just checking understanding.
