In this unit it shows how teaching stress, intonation and rhythm assists the pronunciation of English words. I found all sections very helpful and makes me begin to see why pronunciation is particularly hard for NESB students.
Stress allows us to understand the intended meaning of the sentence depending on which word is 'stressed'. Where stress pertains to words, intonation refers to the sentence. The intonation in a sentence lets us know whether the speaker is making a statement or asking for a response. When teaching intonation the teacher can aid the lesson by using hand gestures which indicate where in the sentence the tone rises or falls. Stress is taught by teaching the rules.
