My one-on-one tutoring experience confirms that it's a good idea to mix up materials. Textbooks provide structure. There's a definite sense of what should be learned, and in what amount of time, for the student. This allows them to better track their progress. It's also useful for them to be able to refer to previous lessons, quizzes that have already been scored, and glossaries. However, to keep interest up, I've found it's good to embark on side discussions, giving a chance to express what's been learned in a more personal manner.I almost could not sit through the first video. I wanted to turn it off after ten seconds. That tells you just how poorly he was doing. He never said his name. He was harsh. He was unhelpful in providing a description of what he wanted. He repeated the same words over and over while expecting a response but was using a term completely unfamiliar to native speakers, let alone learners. The second one was a lot easier to watch. He smiled. Within the first few seconds I was engaged. The teacher makes all the difference in the classroom.
