This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In unit 12, I learnt the differences between accuracy and fluency activities. Accuracy activities are usually integrated in the study phase. These are controlled or teacher-guided activities used to practice correct usage of grammar and language. Fluency activities, on the other hand, are usually done in the activate phase. They provide opportunities for students to experiment and be creative with the language. Again, there are many principles need to be applied to writing activities, such as handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation. This section has given me advice and valuable things to consider in regards to class management, the different uses of body language, and how to deal with problematic behaviour and lack of discipline. In doing so, it has also covered the important subject of how to maximise students' talk time, and minimilise the teacher's. Overall, it makes it quite clear that whilst there are no fail-proof methods to completely avoid obstacles in the classroom, the teacher is able to influence or improve great parts of the atmosphere with their behaviour.
