When teaching English to learners we must keep in mind the 4 things that our students will have to do with there newly acquired skill...be exposed to it, understand it's meaning, understand it's construction and be able to practice and produce it. Using the ESA approach to structuring lessons should help us help our students succeed at each of these tasks and move increasingly greater numbers of words from their receptive vocabulary to their productive vocabularyThis unit gave an overview of different techniques for teaching vocabulary through the engage, study, and activate stages. The engage stage involves a simple way of eliciting the meaning of the word such as a picture whereas the study stage involves an exercise such as a word search activity to really implement the usage of the word. Finally the activate stage is a more complicated in providing a thorough way of using the word such as a debate amongst the class.
