This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 13 focused on teaching pronunciation and phonology. Due to many English teachers’ lack of confidence and training, pronunciation is the most overlooked aspect in English language teaching. After reading this chapter, I understand why teachers may be uncomfortable with tackling pronunciation because this material was difficult. Teaching and learning pronunciation is complicated because native speakers of English pronounce words differently than how they are spelled due to linking, sound changing, sound dropping, and extra lettering. Prior to reading this unit, I was not familiar with the International Phonemic Alphabet Chart. Phonemic symbols can be helpful when trying to teach students pronunciation because the individual sounds are universal and symbols for common or difficult sounds can be used to identify problem areas.
