This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit starts with a presentation of the most common approaches used in ELT and their brief descriptions. The main advantage and disadvantage of each method are also mentioned. However, the majority of this unit is devoted to an explanation of the method introduced by Jeremy Harmer called Engage, Study, and Activate (ESA). The main purpose of the Engage stage is to promote the students’ interest and warm them up and (if possible) direct their attention to the topic of the lesson. The Study step is the component where the students are meant to focus on the structure of the target language. In the final phase, Activate, students should communicate using the language they have acquired without worrying too much about accuracy. Three examples of ESA are ‘Straight Arrow,’ ‘Boomerang,’ and ‘Patchwork.’
