While strictly sticking to a lesson plan is inflexible, lesson planning is an integral skill for any teacher to have. It gives each lesson some structure while keeping a record of what your students has already learned. An effective lesson plan usually consists of following the Straight Arrow approach to planning which is “Engage, Study, and Activate.†Each phase of the Straight Arrow lesson plan should build on the previous step. The Engage step should ease students into the lesson plan with activities such as simply asking questions about what animals your country has in a lesson plan centered on animal vocabulary. The Study step should build on the Engage step and have the students drill until they understand the language point. The Activate step concludes with a large activity that is shared with the rest of the class.
