In this unit I learnt various theories, methods and techniques to learning/teaching. I learnt in detail about the different methodologies of teaching such as grammar-translation, audio-lingualism, presentation, practice and production, task-based learning, communicative language teaching, community language learning, the silent way, suggestopaedia and the lexical approach. I learnt that with so many different approaches and theories, there is not one approach that is more superior than the other. Finally, no matter what teaching approach is used, there are common inclusions such as students need as much exposure to language as possible, students need input from the teacher, communicative tasks are not enough, anxiety and stress need to be low for effective learning and students should be encouraged to discover language for themselves.
