There are many different methods to teaching and there is no clear answer as to which one is best. It all is dependent upon your class. There are a lot of factors that come into play when deciding the right method of teaching for each lesson, but the most important factors should be that students are exposed to language as much as possible and that they need a certain amount of input from the teacher. Jeremy Harmer created the Engage, Study, and Activate technique (ESA) which should be utilized in every lesson. The lesson begins by \"engaging\" the students in the language by getting them speaking as much as possible, then studying the language, and finally ending with \"activating\" their knowledge of what they've learned within the lesson. ESA can be used as a \"straight arrow\" lesson, \"boomerang\" lesson, or \"patchwork\" lesson.
