Speaking and writing are an important part of the English language. It is what we use to communicate with other people. When teaching students, both accuracy (correct usage and reproduction of the language) and fluency (how the speech flows) are a vital part. Teachers need to be able to incorporate activities that focus on both. An example lesson may be as follows. Engage Phase: Show students a short video (i.e. 10-15 second clip of a surprise party). Ask students to describe or come up with ideas of what is happening. Ask what event may have caused the current event? Study Phase: Elicit vocabulary from the students. Perform vocabulary drills on new words. Activate Phase: In pairs have students discuss their experiences at a party or have students plan a party, then have students present their party plans or experiences to the class.
