This unit is based on receptive skills, reading and listening. There are two main motives for reading and listening, either, for a purpose, or for entertainment. Often you will find people read and listen for both purposes, for a purpose, and because they are entertained by that purpose. For example a tour brochure of a city might be interesting and entertaining to read, but at the same time if you are visiting that city it will also help you find your way around so has a purpose too. Pre-existing knowledge also determines how we listen and read, different countries will use different terms and if you have no knowledge of these terms you can take things in a completely different way.
The main problems with listening and reading can come from language use, pre teaching of vocabulary, text use, topics and level of interest in the topic.
