While acquiring new language, four things are very important while doing so ; be exposed to it, understand its meaning, understand how it’s constructed and be able to practice and produce it. Grammar is often said to be the tree trunk and branches of a language while vocabulary and functions are the leaves that add beauty and variety. It should be ensured that students are introduced to new language in a balanced and manageable way. Lessons may include new grammar, vocabulary and functions. Lessons specifically targeted to grammar or vocabulary may use the “straight arrow†approach, whereas functions- based lessons are commonly approached with “boomerang†or “patch work†structures. Teaching new language includes: teaching vocabulary, introducing grammatical structures and teaching language functions.
