This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The focus of this unit is on testing and evaluating students. The text explains that there are several kinds of tests given at different points of the course: placement and diagnostic tests usually occur before the students begin class, as they allow for the students to be placed in appropriate groups, and for the instructor to prepare appropriate materials; progress tests allow the instructor to determine what the students have retained or forgotten and to make appropriate changes to the curriculum; and practice tests help to prepare students to take one of the many external tests which may be required by companies or universities.
The text made it perfectly clear to me that testing is an essential part of the teaching process, and that different tests serve different purposes. Even though there are different ways to gauge progress, a test is a relatively easy way to do so. Placement tests and diagnostic tests are also vital, in that they ensure that each student is placed in the best group. Misplaced students may feel bored, overwhelmed, or frustrated.
What I learned is that the main purpose of tests is to ensure that the course moves smoothly forward, and that any problems or difficulties are identified and promptly addressed.
