This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
No student can produce much in an L2 without having first actively absorbed some of it, probably through listening and reading. Secondary skills of scanning/skimming (in relation to reading) and prediction (for listening) can themselves enhance progress both generally and on any specific task. A teacher should aim to elicit students' interests and use materials at suitable levels which chime with these interests and would hence motivate the students. Authentic Realien would have an increasing role with more advanced students, but at earlier levels might be daunting (e.g. listening to clips of live up-tempo sportscasts 'just' to elicit a fleeting simple term like 'two-nil'). By the end of a lesson, students should to some extent feel they 'own' some new language (to them) by having processed it into reasonably confident active production.
