As a current Assistant Language Teacher in Japan, I found the culture-specific components to be very useful. For example, the reading said that in Asian countries, students are not encouraged to speak with the teacher unless directly told to do so. I find this is absolutely true. I liked reviewing the reasons for learning motivation through the lens of a low- to mid-level Japanese school, where many of my students are not motivated. I would like to incorporate / emphasize these motivating factors more often throughout the lessons so that students remember why they are studying such mundane textbook lessons (beyond simply passing exams). The English education system in Japan can be quite dry, so being a motivator will be hugely important. I also enjoyed reading the different roles of teachers and learners and how they influence one another.
