This was a shorter unit on the teaching of receptive skills, listening and reading, where the student is the recipient of communicative information. These skills differ from the productive skills speaking and writing. The unit covered the various types of skills used in these receptive skills, which depend on the reason for reading/listening, such as skimming, scanning or looking for detailed information.
The unit covered the selection of appropriate texts for students, which included considerations of topic, language level and potential tasks related to the students interests and understanding.
I think this unit was useful for me in that most of my lessons to date have been mostly focused communication, with minimal reading. I have also avoided the use of authentic texts so this could be something to include in my lesson planning from now on.
