This chapter is to help me understand the different ways to evaluate student's abilities before, during, and end of course test. Tests can be used to judge the students' abilities in language, how much they retain information that were taught to them, and also achievement tests (an internal test given at the end of the course. There are also external courses such as the Cambridge tests, TOEFL or SAT etc as part of the university requirements in the application process. I personally have taken the IELTS before as i was trying to get my permanent residency in Canada.Mastering grammar is the foundation in the proficiency of a language. However, grammar teaching is often the part that is unsatisfactory in Hong Kong schools, resulting in weak English foundation of students. And that due to a weak foundation, students often find it difficult to further improve their written and speaking skills as they lack the knowledge of using language structures and phrases in an appropriate way. In view of this, teachers should often remind themselves on this issue and devise methods that would help students grasp the gist in learning grammar.
