When creating a lesson plan a teacher should consider the differences in using authentic materials, which are materials a native speaker would be exposed to and created materials which are made by the teacher. Authentic materials include things like newspapers, media, poetry, while created materials are anything made by the teacher such as crossword puzzles and artistic creations. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Authentic materials may inspire confidence and excitement in students but they cannot be graded to level while created materials can be. Also one needs to consider the use of textbooks in this process as well. Textbooks use tried and tested syllabus that can provide a guideline for how to structure a lesson, but they can be bland and offer only general information not specific to individual students which can cause boredom.
