Teaching students conditionals and reported speech can be complicated. Conditionals are used to talk about real or unreal situations and their consequences. If this happens, then that happens.Conditionals forms should be introduced to students once they are familiar with the basic past, present and future tenses. We use reported speech,otherwise known as indirect speech, when we want to report what someone else said. Teaching reported speech can be complicated, because of all the changes required by when moving from direct speech into reported speech.It should be introduced to students with simple examples in which changes are only made in tenses. Once the students have understood the basic concept of stepping one step back into the past when reporting in the past, they can easily begin to make the minor changes in pronouns and time expressions.
