The two productive skills are speaking and writing. When communicating- there is a need and desire to express oneself and/or listen to another. The two important kinds of skills (when practicing productive skills) are accuracy and fluency. Accuracy is focused on in the Study phase- when drills and correct language is drawn out from the students by the teacher. Fluency is focused on in the Activate phase when allowing the class to experiment and be creative with the language: grammar, spelling, structure, and vocabulary.This unit covered pronunciation and phonology. Parts of phonology are stress, rhythm and intonation. Intonation is the change in pitch and volume and carries the message in a sentence. The normal pattern is slow rise and fall at the end of a sentence/question. Fall/rise indicates that the speaker wants an answer. Apart from explaining stress the unit explains how we articulate and which parts of the mouth are used. It goes further to explain where the different sounds are made and offers a chart of the phonemic symbols.
