The receptive skills are listening and reading, the productive skills are speaking and writing. They are equally important. A good teacher should pay attention to the development of all of them to have balanced lessons. There are two types of reading and listening: for a purpose and for entertainment. Students employ a number of special skills when reading and listening. They are: predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed information and deduction from context.
The teaching and learning of receptive skills has some difficulties but there are many ways to approach them , such as teaching the students difficult and unknown vocabulary before reading or listening, careful selection of texts graded to the level of students, using different topics catered for all, motivating students, creating interest and giving them different interesting tasks.
