The receptive skills are listening and reading, because learners do not need to produce language to do these, they receive and understand it. These skills are sometimes known as passive skills. They can be contrasted with the productive or active skills of speaking and writing.

These skills have to be learned and mastered. Even listening which seems an obvious inborn ability must be learntIn this unit I learned about past tense. Past tense has the following types: past simple, past perfect, past contentious, and past perfect contentious. Students will often become confused about which verb to use in past tense. For example, did and didn`t or was and were. I think it`s important to break these different verb usages down a bit for the students. Do a lesson on each basic verb used in past tense would be better than trying to lump them all together. Doing too much too soon could confuse the students even more than they already are.
