First off, I was happy to see that the teacher in the first video was also the teacher in the second video because the first was so painful to watch. With that said, I think what made the second lesson so much more effective was the teacher's affect--he seemed to genuinely care for his students and acted as if he wanted to be there. He had a rapport--he used students' names, he laughed at the small coincidences (e.g. two students with the same name), and he committed to the material (e.g. jumping off a chair while flapping to elicit \"fly\" from students). I do think that this lesson would be enhanced by having students act out some of the material rather than just draw it to promote the language's use in a more conversational way (a second activation phase), but all in all, the second lesson was a solid illustration of good pedagogical practice.
