In language teaching, there are many different methods and techniques such as ‘ESA’ - Engage, Study and Activate method, ‘PPP’ - Presentation, Practice and Production method, ‘CLT’ - Communicative Language Teaching, task-based learning and grammar-translation. A teacher should consider his/her own circumstances including the culture and needs of the students in order to decide which methods to apply.
I learned that ESA approach is the most appropriate for new teachers to apply in the classroom. There are three types of ESA lessons: (1) ‘Straight Arrow’ lesson (2) ‘Boomerang’ lesson and (3) ‘Patchwork’ lesson. All these ESA lessons include the stages of Engage phase, Study phase and Activate phase. The ESA lessons always should start with an Engage phase and finish with an Activate stage.
