This unit focused on what are labelled the two receptive skills of language-reading and listening-and how to go about teaching them in the classroom. More specifically, it outlined various techniques and methods for engaging the students, holding their interest, and then subsequently teaching reading in the classroom. It laid particular emphasis on using a variety of texts in order to appeal to all of the students' interests, as well as using texts that are appropriate for non-native learners (non-authentic texts) and appropriate for the given level.
From there, this unit discussed lesson frameworks for teaching reading skills. It advocated, for instance, engaging the students through elicitation, pre-teaching any vocabulary or structures that may prove too difficult without any kind of introduction, then moving onto the study phases of the lesson.
