Unit 11 of this course introduces the topic of teaching receptive skills. Receptive skills are very important when one desires to learn a new language. Reading and listening are the two receptive skills needed to learn any language.
They are called receptive skills because through these two skills a person can get information about something. That is why a blind person who can not see will learn something by listening. Reading on the other hand can be done in two different ways. Pronouncing what you are reading if you are reading to other people or reading quietly if you are alone. In both ways information is passed on.
It is also important to note that there are different reasons for reading and listening. The reasons for which someone reads or listens determine how much attention that person gives to whatever he or she is reading or listening.
