Organisation is a very important element for a successful course and a lesson plan helps teachers in many ways: in every moment we know what to do and what we have done and moreover, we feel more confident if we have a plan we can rely on. Naturally, we need to be flexible sometimes and be able to change our lesson plan if students are tired for instance, go back to some grammar points if we feel the students cannot keep up etc.
Lesson plans need to be clear and simple, divided into phases (with timing), they need to include learner objectives and personal aims, the class level, aids, activities and cover all the components required.
Before the lesson starts, teachers should also check that the equipment is functional, arrange the seating, clean the board if it takes and talk a bit to the students as they come in so as to make them feel comfortable.
