Past tense structure is similar to the present tense structure and can be taught after to build of the student’s schema. Past simple requires an –ed at the end but there are also irregular verbs that do not use the –ed ending. Memory games can help students memorize which verbs have irregular past tenses. Past continuous requires was/were and a present participle to describe an action in the past that continued after the given time frame. This can be taught with a detective game or journals. Past perfect requires had and a past participle that describes an action that happened before another action. Helpful exercises for this include storytelling with multiple past actions. Finally, past perfect continuous describes an action that happened for a period of time until a moment; it required a “had been†and a present participle.
