This unit discussed the characteristics of good teachers and good learners, as well as the characteristics of different levels of learners (from students who are just starting to learn English to advanced language learners) as well as different ages of students. As a non-certified ESL teacher, I find these descriptions to be true of my own learners and practices, as I have had to learn things like how to tell apart one student’s level from another’s, even though they were in the same beginner class and therefore how to figure out what level of curriculum to teach the class. I have also seen students’ varied motivations for attending class, as we have talked about here, and how that can change depending on the kind and quality of learning that took place in the classroom, and on interaction between the students and myself as the teacher.
