The evaluation of students is necessary to determine the following:
• The level of proficiency in English to ensure that the student is placed at the correct level.
• To identify areas of weakness or areas that require attention (student and teacher and course content).
• To monitor progress – for the teacher of the student; for the students, themselves; for the teacher about themselves; and the course content.
• To obtain a recognised qualification or proficiency level certification.
The above can be achieved through tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests. The latter mentioned can be used to identify different as mentioned above as well as being the formalised external exams. Tests should in my view cover grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, listening and speaking as this covers the entire spectrum of proficiency.
