Unit 11 is about teaching Receptiive Skills. Receptive skills are reading and listening. We read and listen for two reasons, for a purpose and/or for entertainment. There are five skills involved with reading and listening. They are predictive, deduction, scanning, skimming, and detailed. Some problems that might occur with reading are: students reading word for word, sentence length, and the structure of the text. Some problems with listening might be speed of speech, accent of speaker, or the flow of information. When selecting text or dialogue, teachers need to be careful to choose texts with language at the level of the student, and texts with topics that interest the students. Some fun tasks for the students might be jigsaw reading or jumbled texts. Some games to play could be tic-tac-toe or Jeopardy. Lessons should be engaging and fun!
