This unit focused on course books and supplemental materials. In general for ESL classes, course books are optional. This means that having course books available to your class will depend on where you are teaching and who you are working for. If you have the opportunity to use course books, you should not rely on them to teach lessons but use them to support lessons. Supplementary materials can help students see how the language is used. There are materials, like poems, that are used in the classroom as a real example for the language lesson in progress. As the teacher, you can also create materials that are more specific to your lesson. These created materials are more appropriate for beginner and elementary classes who may feel overwhelmed by real materials. For me, I will use whatever is best for the level of learner I have in my classroom.
