Reading and listening are equally important however, they occur for different reasons and motives. This can be contributed to the purpose such as learning or as entertainment that can by pleasurable. When reading or listening, the individual may employ the following five skills being predictive, scanning, skimming, for detailed information and deduction from content.
When teaching language, it's important to understand the above skills and potential problems that students may encounter. For example, reading allows for greater time to process the information whereas listening may not in a short amount of time. Pre-teaching difficult or known vocabulary and selecting non-authentic text can reduce such issues. In addition, understanding each student assists selecting engaging topics, interesting content and tasks that will motivate and benefit students.
