Modal auxiliary verbs can be used to express different ideas such as ability, advise, obligation, permission and possibility. It can also be used to express degrees of formality. Modal verbs are followed by a verb in its base form. There are various ways in which a teacher can help students to understand the use of modal auxiliary verbs. In English there are two voices used, the passive voice where objects of an active verb become the subject of the passive verb and a active voice where the focus is on the agent. Only transitive verbs are used in the passive voice. A clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb. The three categories of clauses are independent clause, dependent clause and relative clause. Phrasal verb consists of a verb plus one or two particles. The 3 types are intransitive, transitive separable and transitive inseparable.
