This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This was by far the most difficult (and most fun) unit so far because I'm not as familiar with phonetics as I am with the other topics. I had previously learned a small portion of the phonetic alphabet when briefly studying Arabic and I'm very glad I was able to recall much of what I had learned - otherwise this material would have been entirely new to me. Speaking like a native speaker is so much more than just having the correct words - you actually have to sound like one too! This is why pronunciation and phonology are so vital to language learning. I can understand why phonetics are often neglected in teaching, but it shouldn't be so. As stated in the material, a change in intonation or stress in \"yes\" is all it takes to communicate an entirely different message - making it all the more important that we teach students how to use the language.
