This unit presents the teaching of productive skills—speaking and writing. Although writing is the most neglected skill in an English as a foreign language class, it is considered as the most difficult. Since writing requires a greater degree of accuracy, enough time must be allotted to it in order to develop this skill. On the other hand, speaking requires a greater degree of fluency. This means that one must be fluent because he/she will rarely have time to think and plan what to answer. In other words, mental alertness is necessary. Meanwhile, a person who commits a grammatical error while speaking can make ‘on the spot’ corrections. Finally, accuracy and fluency activities were differentiated. Although both are equally important, the former is focused on producing correct language while the latter is concentrated on developing creativity.
