This unit discusses the use of coursebooks and lesson materials in teaching. There are two types of materials: authentic materials and coursebooks. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. While authentic materials are often topical, interesting, and if used properly, can significant boost students' progress, coursebooks provide a tried and tested syllabus that allows students to monitor their progress. One should never center an entire class around coursebooks, but should instead use a combination of such materials and authentic ones to cater to the specific needs of the students.Similar to \"Unit 4\", the main focus of this unit is on four different past tenses. The considerable part of the unit is about the formation and usage of each tense which could lead to a proper language presentation and comprehension at elicitation, study, and activate stage as well as predicting typical errors/ mistakes made by students which helps teachers provide adequate and appropriate examples and techniques to work them out. Importantly, some activate stage teaching ideas are mentioned including the communicative use of each tense which facilitates the process of acquisition.
