Unit 11 covered strategies for teachers developing a lesson around the receptive skills of listening and reading. Keeping both the students' interests and abilities with the language in mind, the teacher can pre-select authentic or non-authentic tasks of interest to the students and design activities to help encourage students to engage and practice listening in English and reading with understanding. Through this, we can assist students in developing their English understanding with a purpose and for leisure. Both can be developed in the class. A teacher could use purposeful material to get students thinking about their future careers and create a lesson around flexibility and variety, or they could use a leisure based lesson where they get the students to bring in something of interest to them in English, be that a CD or a clipping from the news or a book.
