This unit focused on teaching receptive skills, in particular reading and listening. We use specialist skills when we read and listen. This includes, but is not limited to, skills like: predictive skills; skimming; scanning; and deduction. When teaching receptive skills it's important to keep students engaged by presenting materials, in this case videos and/or texts, that are of interest to the group one is teaching. This doesn't mean a total commonality of interest must exist, but topics that are of general interest to all should be used. I found the lesson plan exercises based on the teaching materials included in the unit to be especially helpful. It really helps me to keep the lesson planning tasks organized and I am noticing that as read through the units now, I am mentally making notes about how I might teach various skills/language points/etc.
