Many different methods of teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) have influenced modern-day EFL teaching. The ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) method of EFL teaching is a very effective method used today, especially for new teachers and trainees. The three essential components of the ESA method include the Engage phase, the Study phase and the Activate phase.The initial Engage phase is used to involve and interest the students in using the language while the Study phase is the teaching component. The final Activate phase involves creative use of the language with an emphasis on fluency rather than accuracy. The three phases can be used multiple times in a particular lesson as long as the lesson begins with the Engage phase and ends with an Activate phase. Elicitation techniques and effective feedback are also essential ingredients in the ESA teaching method.
