Teachers should use a mix of authentic and created materials along with a course book and other supplemental or adapted activities to give students the ideal balance of course materials. Authentic materials help students to gain confidence in understanding real-world materials, while created materials are ideal because they can be graded to the level of the class and focused on specific topics that interest the students. Using a course book gives the teacher a rough syllabus for the class that will help the students gauge their progress, practice a balance of various skills, and continue to practice previously learned material. However, teachers should not base all lessons exclusively on the course book, but should be creative about choosing, adapting, or supplementing course book activities or new, creative activities that will be most helpful for the students.
