This unit was a little off point in dealing with the subjunctive mood. Originally when I used the recommended reference The Practical Usage English Guide by Michael Swan I though his use of the subjunctive present and past as separate tenses made a lot of sense in teaching English as a foreign language.
But in this unit they simply skipped over the entire issue in the discussion of the second conditional and said the use of the verb 'were' was more formal than the use of the verb was. I don't think that is even close to being an adequate explanation.
I really don't know how that would be an acceptable explanation to anyone. Ir seems just a method of glossing over the entire issue, maybe because the subjunctive isn't taught by this course. I like the guidance by Michael Swan much better.
But maybe this issue will be addressed more formally in a later unit.
