This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Conditionals open up language to the realm of possibilities, such that the speaker can suggest a range of if/then ideas both certain and hypothetical in any sense of time. These are broken down into the certain 'zero conditional', possible outcome 'first conditional', hypothetical present or future situation 'second conditional', hypothetical past action 'third conditional', and a variety 'mixed conditional' for combining tense and plausibility structures from any of the former conditional clauses. Though appearing complex, and requiring highly specific rules, having a student role-play in such situations makes the need for such language immediately apparent and easier to understand. Also from the unit, reported speech and how it changes pronouns, verb tense, and form of a word expressing time is discussed, and how employing the use of 'backshifting' is helpful.
