I really enjoyed this unit because it made the most sense to me, when thinking logically about beginning a new language. The receptive skills are built first, and these skills are the foundation for speaking and writing. The Straight Arrow ESA lesson plan was easy to follow and easy to generate as a teacher. I think pop culture is a great topic because there are different art forms that the students will take interest in and be excited to learn more about. I found the notion of authentic vs. non-authentic reading materials to be helpful because if a less-advanced student is dealt only authentic texts, that student might be intimidated by the language, rather than being able to process the material step by step. I personally find reading headlines to get the gist of an article to be a useful exercise, especially when thinking about the context and tone of language.
