A teacher should always pay attention to what the best material is to use. We should distinguish between authentic materials and created materials. Created materials have the benefit of being adaptable to different situations and skill levels. However, they are not always engaging. Authentic materials are taken from the real word and are often interesting and engaging to the students; it gives them confidence to use English in the real world. But authentic materials are hard to classify according to difficulty, and may not be the best for beginning English students.
Course books have their advantages and disadvantages. What seems good to me is to use a course book, but, much like a lesson plan, not force ourselves to follow it to every last detail. We should feel free to deviate from the book when necessary. Besides, students love an unexpected break from the book.
