The receptive skills of reading and listening are vital toward being able to use and communicate in any language effectively. When a lesson is meant to focus on receptive skills and an activity involves reading a text or listening to a dialogue, it can be helpful to pre-teach key language points and vocabulary that could otherwise potentially be missed by the students. However, I think that an important skill to develop is understanding a text without knowing every word. Students can develop skills of finding context clues and reading subtexts if the teacher does not pre-teach too much and gives the student a challenging but appropriate activity for the class level. It is good to have a balance of authentic and non-authentic texts and dialogues, vary the material used and build interest before introducing something that is meant to build students' receptive skills.
