By comparing the four types of present tenses to the correlating past tenses we can see the similarities in how they are used. The past tenses generally follow the same rules when creating affirmative, negative, and question sentences. For the past simple tense \"ed\" or \"d\" are added to regular verbs, but there are many irregular verbs that must be memorized by the students, since there is no distinct way to tell which verb is regular and which is irregular. The past continuous needs the auxiliary verb \"was/were\" with the main verb and \"ing\". The past perfect needs the auxiliary verb \"had\" with the past participle. And, the past perfect continuous uses two auxiliary verbs \"had\" and \"been\" with the main verb plus \"ing\". With these four past tenses learned that brings the verb studying to 2/3 complete and there is only four more future tenses to go over.
