Because I have 3 years of teaching experience, the unit made a lot of sense to me as I was reading over the material. For me, the structuring of a lesson plan is very familiar. However, as I was answering the questions on the test, I found that I struggled to fit the various activities listed in the answers into the ESA Straightarrow model. I became increasingly confused about the differences in activities between the study and activate stages. As I understand it, the ENGAGE phase is what hooks the students into the lesson and gets them to start thinking about the day's lesson. Then, the study phase is where the teacher (or sometimes the students) really focus in on the basics of the material. Then, the activate phase gives students the time to use what they have learned in meaningful ways, such as through class or small group discussion or other speaking activities.
